PZH students are right in the middle of it
Approximately 400 mechanical engineering students at the Leibniz University of Hannover not only attend seminars at PZH but also contribute to basic and/or industrial research. They gather experience with the inner workings of a research project, from grant proposal to final report; they help with the organization of symposia and the preparation of industry contacts. With their project-related and praxis-oriented student research papers, bachelor and master theses, they contribute to the advancement of their field of study, discover the various research areas first-hand and develop their academic interests and strengths.
In short: Some 400 so-called student research assistants jobs with diverse scientific backgrounds, and yet closely related to each other, catapult students into the midst of research life early-on and facilitate their choice of professional focus as well as their entry into their chosen career field.
Welcome to the Mechatronics Laboratory, Welcome to the Race!
Founded in 2004, PZH is still a fairly young institution: An advantage which benefits the students attending seminars there. Apart from the modern lecture hall and seminar rooms, PZH also has state-of-the-art laboratory workstations at its disposal. Twenty of these can be found in the Mechatronics laboratory, which in itself is an integral part of the ‘Control Engineering’ lecture; there students can control a miniature conveyor system, or assemble a mini high bay warehouse in accordance with their respective specifications.
New workstations equipped with the software necessary for the tutorials introducing the measuring program “labview” and the CAD-program “AutoCAD Inventor” have been available for several years. This equipment has been financed, amongst other things, by tuition fees. Students at PZH even have their own foundry where they can learn casting, in particular casting of lightweight metal alloys.
The Formula-Student-Team is the right place for those students who love fast speeds: In a box in the hall of the Institute of Material Sciences the team ‘Horsepower Hanover’ prepares for the racing season. The students – mostly of engineering backgrounds – are building a race car which should participate in the international student version of the F1. The team enjoys the support not only of the PZH scientists, but also of many sponsors.
A Faculty of Standing and Reputation
PZH is a part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Leibniz University of Hanover; the faculty currently consists of 17 institutes which offer a first class education to 2695 students, including 351 women. In the CHE-Ranking, the nationwide university comparison campaign lead by the Centre for Higher Education Development, the faculty has been assigned several times to the top groups: It is among the best in the promotions and research grants groups. The current ranking of the German Research Foundation (DFG), based on the research funds acquired in the years from 2005 to 2007, shows: With 41.2 million Euros research funds gathered, the faculty occupies fourth place – right behind the Technical Universities of Aachen, Darmstadt and Erlangen-Nuremberg.
These numbers doubtlessly prove it: Mechanical engineers at the Leibniz University of Hannover are provided with the best possible conditions for research - and they use them! With these excellent results, it is unsurprising that – when it comes to the amount of funding received for research purposes - the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering takes the third place at the Leibniz University.
The Leibniz University of Hanover also enjoys a top position when it comes to collegiate sports. Nonetheless, even those who usually prefer not to socialize via physical activity, but by drinking a beer with friends instead, are in good hands: For example, at the First Semester Parties of the mechanical engineers. No student needs to be a loner: The halls of the Otto-Klüsener-House offer the mechanical engineering students with their diverse self-governed activities an alternative to solitude.
One City, Five Universities, No Boredom
Approximately 21.000 students study at the Leibniz University of Hanover (LUH). Additionally, another 7.000 students attend the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (FH) and some 3,000 students - the Hannover Medical School (MHH); the students of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, Foundations number about 2.000, whereas those of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media – 1200. Hanover is a city of science and students, offering its excellent facilities to students of various disciplines.
Every two years, the initiative "November, the Science" presents the full diversity of the scientific life in Hanover. Science will once again be made public in November 2012.
And beyond all knowledge, the Maschsee, the Eilenriede or the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen are just a few of the many reasons for a visit to Hanover!
